Ag in the Classroom

Georgia Farm Bureau Federation’s Ag In The Classroom is doing a book of the month activity this year. Mrs. Betty Metts of Irwin County Farm Bureau explained the program:

"Our Women’s committee took the activity as one of our projects. Our first book is Winter on The Farm, adapted from The Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

We have, so far, been to 4 classrooms and we have 10 more before the end of February!!!

We read the book, and then each child is given about 1 oz. of heavy cream to shake into butter. It goes in line with the story because in the book Almanzo talks about milking the cows and his mother straining the milk. We give the children crackers to enjoy their butter with.

This is a fun activity, but we also take opportunity to explain food safety (hand sanitizing, refrigeration and such).

This has been a really great project! The kids love it! I really appreciate the elementary school having us come from time to time. We have been to classrooms in the past, but some teachers were not aware of our Ag In The Classroom program. In the future months, we will review the books and then send e-mails to age appropriate classes."
