Online Parent Resources

Great! Schools Milestones: A free online collection of videos aimed at helping parents understand grade-level expectations in grades K-12. Milestones show students demonstrating what success looks like in reading, writing and math, grade by grade.

Georgia Standards Parents' Page: GeorgiaStandards.Org allows parents easy access to information about the state’s standards. This web site also offers a variety of free resources to help you motivate and support your child’s curriculum at home while reinforcing the standards your child is working on in the classroom.

Helping Children Succeed in School: Sponsored by the University of Illinois, an excellent site that contains information on parental involvement in school, learning styles, study habits and homework, test taking, parent-teacher communication, and more.

GADOE Testing Resources: Testing Resources available to help parents and students get ready for standardized tests. Choose to view the different assessment programs administered at the various grade levels as well as resources to help your students prepare.

Parent Toolkit: Designed to help you track and support progress at each stage, Parent Toolkit helps you navigate your child’s journey from pre-kindergarten through high school.

Parent Involvement

Parental involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities, including ensuring:

  • Parents play an integral role in assisting their child’s learning,
  • Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s education at school,
  • Parents are full partners in their child’s education and are included, as appropriate, in decision-making and on advisory committees to assist in the education of their child,
  • Other activities are carried out, such as those described in Section 1118 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA).

To that end, the Irwin County School System provides the following assistance to parents:

  • Assisting parent/guardians in understanding the State’s academic content standards and academic achievement standards and goals,
  • Assisting parent/guardians in understanding the requirements of Title I Part A,
  • Assisting parent/guardians in monitoring their child’s academic progress,
  • Assisting parent/guardians in understanding state and local assessments,
  • Assisting parent/guardians in knowing how to work with educators to improve achievement,
  • Providing the opportunity for parents/guardians to request training on topics and specific workshop opportunities.

In addition, parents will be given help in understanding:

  • The state’s academic content standards (CCGPS),
  • The state’s student academic achievement standards (CCRPI),
  • The state and local academic assessments including alternate assessments (local benchmarks, GKIDS, GA Milestone Assessment System, SLOs, Writing, ACCESS for ELs, GAA),
  • The requirements of Title I, Part A,
  • How to monitor their child’s progress (progress reports, report cards, parent conferences, parental portal for Power School),
  • How to work with educators (Literature, brochures, website).

A percentage of Title I School-wide funding is set aside each year for parental involvement activities.

Parent Resource Center

The Parent Resource Center is designed to empower parents to assist their children in maximizing their full potential. The center's resources are focused on instruction for students in grades kindergarten through 5. There are two computers available for use by parents as well as a lending library, giving parents the opportunity to take resources home with them, on loan.

The Parent Resource Center will serve as a wonderful resource and allow parents to more effectively assist in their children's academic and social growth. Parents are encouraged to take full advantage of the resources and allow the facilitator at the center to empower them to be a more successful parent.

Irwin County Elementary School's Parent Involvement Plan is available online and hard copies are available in the Parent Resource Center.  Parents may give feedback at any time during the school year. District plans are also available for review in the center.

At the present time, center hours are Monday through Friday 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Evening hours will be offered throughout the year during Parent Nights. The center is located inside the media center.

 

Title I Schoolwide

Title I SchoolwideTitle I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) is the largest federally-funded program for elementary, middle, and high schools. Money is allocated to school districts based on the number of low-income families in each district. Each district uses Title I money to provide services for children most in need of educational help, conduct parental involvement activities, purchase supplemental programs and supplies, and to recruit/retain Highly Qualified teachers.

Irwin County Elementary is a school-wide Title I school and receives additional federal funding to support instruction. School-wide means that all students in the school are served by the Title I Program.

The Irwin County School System is engaged in continuous school improvement as part of our responsibility with Title I funding. Use the links below to view the documents related to these improvement plans.

Toll-Free School Safety Hotline
1-877-SAY-STOP
MAKE THE CALL AND STOP VIOLENCE IN YOUR SCHOOL

The 1-877-SAY-STOP toll- free hotline was created by the Georgia Department of Education. Students can anonymously report anyone who has a weapon, has threatened to bring a weapon to school, or has violated any other school safety rules. The hotline hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; after 5 p.m. all calls will be forwarded to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Callers will not be asked to reveal their identities. Make the call; you can make a difference!
